For many years I've had an interest in photography, but I lacked the confidence in myself to justify the expense of getting a "real" camera and learning how to use it.
Digital SLR's have been coming down in price and becoming quite affordable. I finally broke down and bought a Canon Digital Rebel XTi (EOS 400D). Now I'm kicking myself for not doing something like this years ago, even if I had to do it with a film camera.
I always sort of had an aversion to film. I messed with it a little back in high school and felt that it was a very limiting medium because of how many images you could fit in a roll of film, and how much it cost to purchase and process the film.
No wonder I was an early adopter of digital. I think I bought my first digital camera in 1994 or 1995. It was an Epson PhotoPC. Images were very small but I was hooked. I never did shoot film again after that.
But now I've got the digital SLR, and my capabilities have grown exponentially. I've been working on understanding the fundamentals and I'm at the point now where I usually shoot full manual, and sometimes will fall back on shutter priority mode with auto focus if I'm shooting a fast moving event.
But now that I have a grasp of the fundamentals, I'm finding that I'm curious about giving film another chance. Imagine that!
I do shoot all kinds of things. A lot of what I shoot, like my children, is kept private. I also do a lot of work with models, and I do post that online.
